With the 2023 IAA Mobility held in Munich now in the rearview mirror, we are gradually turning our attention to the next major event. The North American International Auto Show is kicking off this week with the press days scheduled for September 13-14 and will run until the last public day on the 24th of the month. Jeep will be attending NAIAS, and judging by this sole teaser image published on social media, it’ll bring an updated Gladiator.

We’d reckon the revisions planned for the midsize pickup aren’t exactly top-secret considering Jeep hasn’t really tried to hide them. By that we mean spy photographers have caught prototypes of the 2024 Gladiator being tested without any sort of camouflage. In addition, the truck’s SUV sibling was updated a few months ago when Jeep brought the 2024 Wrangler to the New York Auto Show (NYAS) in early April.

2024 Jeep Gladiator Spy Photos

Expect a slightly smaller iteration of the traditional seven-bar front grille with an all-black finish flanked by discreetly updated turn signals. Jeep is also tweaking the front bumper and taillights but nothing to write home about. There could be some fresh wheel designs on offer taking into account the 2024 Wrangler comes with several new alloys varying in size from 17 to 20 inches and paired with up to 35-inch tires.

Prototypes have been spotted with a revised cabin that appeared to have a larger infotainment. As you may recall, the Wrangler now rocks a 12.3-inch touchscreen and has rectangular center air vents mounted below rather than the round ones flanking the display on the pre-facelift model. The 2024 Gladiator should have the same layout while sticking to the round vents at the corners of the dashboard.

The 2024MY will not include a diesel option since the Gladiator Rubicon FarOut special edition introduced last month was the final iteration of the 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel-powered truck. It’s limited to 1,000 units at $71,790 (including the $1,795 destination charge) apiece and can be ordered until the end of this month. Those looking for that extra efficiency should know the diesel’s indirect replacement is widely believed to take the shape of a 4xe plug-in hybrid but we’ll have to wait for an official announcement.

Meanwhile, we already know the 2024 Gladiator is not coming to Europe where Jeep is retiring the pickup altogether with a FarOut Final Edition.

First report: it’s love at first sight as we take delivery of our smart new SUV

  • 4.0 out of 5

How we review carsBuy used for less at Buyacar

    Verdict

Our family has a real love of Alfa Romeos, and – almost a quarter of a century after a 156 helped bring us together – the first signs are that my husband and I will enjoy life with the brand’s smallest SUV.

    • Mileage: 4,599
    • Economy: 38.5mpg
    • There is just something about Alfa Romeo; the name and romance seem to go together. Despite the marque’s reputation for unreliability, the looks win out.

My husband and I have always had a soft spot for the brand and back in 1999, when we were first dating, I specifically asked to borrow the just-launched Alfa 156 for an evening – one way to make an impression! I remember the model didn’t disappoint either, bringing a smile to both our faces.

So when I heard the next fleet car I would be getting was an Alfa Romeo, we were both genuinely excited. It certainly softened the blow of having to hand back our previous Stellantis product, because the DS 4 was so comfortable it had become a firm favourite.

Our new Alfa is the firm’s baby SUV, the Tonale, in range-topping Veloce trim with a PHEV powertrain. The line-up starts from £48,495, but the on-the-road price for our model is £52,945 – by the far the most expensive vehicle I’ve had the keys to.

The special Montreal Green paint costs £1,500, plus our car is fitted with a Leather and Harman Kardon Pack and the Winter Pack. For £2,600, these bring a 14-speaker premium sound system, leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated seats, while the Mode 3 charging cable adds another £350.

The quoted range on electric power is 40 miles and the car arrived fully charged with a reading of 35, which is promising. There is also an e-save button below the gearstick, which you press to save your electric power for when you want it. It’s already proven  useful on drives from the coast to London, saving the EV power for the 20mph zones and inevitable heavy traffic. We’ve also found that the regenerative braking does top up the predicted range – something that didn’t happen in the DS we ran previously.

The exterior styling of the car certainly doesn’t let down the Alfa name; it really is a smart-looking SUV. I was a fan from the word go, but studying the car closely while the photographer took the pictures for this report, I found myself really admiring it, as did various passers-by. It has a few little details that only enhance the look, and the front and rear lights are wonderful.

The interior is fairly minimalist, with a good-quality 10.25-inch touchscreen nicely positioned on top of the dashboard, while the physical climate controls underneath are a definite bonus. There is some black plastic, but everything you touch has a nice feel; the smart three-spoke steering wheel is leather-trimmed, as is the gear shifter, while the paddles (standard with Veloce trim) are metal. These, along with a small strip along the dashboard, and the silver air vents,
      break up the black.

      icon

The leather seats look great and are comfortable, plus electronic adjustment makes setting your driving position that much easier. There is also good adjustment on the steering wheel, which is very useful for us, given that my husband and I have very different driving positions.

It’s early days, but so far we are loving life with our Italian motor and looking forward to getting to know it better. We have already been asked about it a couple of times, and one lady in particular really wanted to know what we thought of it. She was an Alfa fan, having previously owned a Stelvio which, in her words, hadn’t put a foot wrong, and has been looking at the Tonale for her next car.

We obviously couldn’t make any comment on the car’s reliability just yet, but we passed on our initial impressions of the PHEV drivetrain, and told her it was definitely a good option, particularly if you have a way to charge at home. So perhaps we have pushed her towards a purchase – and hopefully we’ll also go on to have as much of a trouble-free time as she did with her Alfa.

Model: Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce 1.3 280 PHEV

RAC explain how to check a cars engine oil level

Petrol and diesel owners could destroy their engines by pouring in too much oil, according to leading mechanic Scotty Kilmer.

Motorists are likely to “blow the seals out of the engine” and could even “jam the pistons” by ignoring the advice.

Kilmer issued the warning after he noticed some road users were forgetting to drain their existing oil before topping up their tanks.

This often means they have double the amount inside their vehicles which can lead to serious damage to key parts.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kilmer said: “Today I’m going to show you what happens if you put too much oil in your engine.

READ MORE Diesel owners should stop putting popular product in their cars, says mechanic

“Now I’ve seen people put four quarts of oil in an engine that takes four quarts but they have forgotten to drain the other stuff out.

“So they had eight quarts and it actually destroyed their engine because if you have that much oil it can actually jam in on the pistons and it can bend the piston rods making you need a complete engine overhaul.

“But even if you’re just a quart or two over the full you can blow the seals out of the engine, the rear main seal of the engine requires pulling the engine out to replace it. It’s an expensive repair.”

According to Total Energies, pouring in too much oil can also put pressure on the crankshaft which can lead to leaks.

Excess oil could also find itself onto the spark plugs which will then need to be replaced.

They urge drivers who think they have too much oil in their cars to drain their tanks immediately.

Total Energies claims road users who are unaware of how to fix it should consult a mechanic as soon as possible.

However, owners should get their vehicle towed to a garage as driving it is likely to do further damage to vital components.

Kilmer has urged motorists to check their oil regularly to make sure they never go above the limits.

He added: “Now that’s what dipsticks are for. They’ve got two lines. A low line and a full line, Always make sure it does not go over the full line.

“Don’t check your engine oil on a hill. Always check it on a flat surface after it’s sat at least five minutes for it to drain to the right level.”

      ]]>
The Subaru Outback Wilderness Edition was introduced for the 2022 model year as a more rugged version of the standard lifted wagon. Described as the most capable Outback ever, the vehicle has 9.5 inches of ground clearance, up from the base model’s 8.7 inches, and improved approach, brakeover, and departure angles. These are some solid numbers for a wagon but that doesn’t necessarily mean everyone should use their Outback Wilderness Edition in the trails.

The owner of the white wagon featured in the video at the top of this page had something different in mind when purchasing his Outback Wilderness Edition. His family lives in an area where there are many unpaved roads and the situation gets worse when it rains. This isn’t off-roading per se but the higher ground clearance and all-terrain tires do help a lot when more traction is needed.

Gallery: 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness Edition

In fact, the car is used mostly as a daily ride taking care of responsibilities such as getting kids to daycare and shopping. And for those tasks – even if you live on the edge of the world – you don’t really need a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. The owner also notes the exterior look of the car, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it definitely makes it stand out from the rest in a parking lot. As far as the interior is concerned, it is apparently very comfortable, easy to clean, and doesn’t get too hot even on sunny days.

The white wagon replaced a Toyota RAV4 in the family’s garage and the main reason for this decision, in addition to the added ground clearance, was the fact that the Subaru was way more spacious with a child seat in the back. Also, it features all sorts of safety systems, and with a baby on board, the more safety, the better. There’s also a decent amount of trunk space, which the owner really appreciates.

How is the ride quality? Is it thirsty? What are the pros and cons compared to a hardcore body-on-frame SUV? Which part gets criticized? All the answers are in the video at the top of this page.

With more than 500,000 deliveries in the United States since the introduction of the current-generation model in 2015, the Nissan Murano has been one of the solid players in the market. But in the rapidly evolving world of SUVs, a new generation was long overdue, and finally, we were treated to the first spy photos of the next-gen Murano earlier this month. It is now time for the first renderings giving us an early preview of the completely overhauled vehicle.

One of the most noticeable changes over the outgoing model is the updated V-Motion grille, which appears wider but doesn’t delve as deeply into the front fascia as the current model. The oversized headlights of the current Murano will be downsized, with some lighting elements seemingly relocated to the grille area. Overall, the front fascia gives us strong Ariya vibes, though the new Murano appears to feature an even more sophisticated look.

      Gallery: New Nissan Murano renderings

In profile view, the next-gen Murano maintains a strong similarity to its predecessor. The distinctive kink in the C-pillar is visible beneath the camouflage wrap, and the beltline still features the characteristic hump behind the side glass. Moving to the rear, a new lower fascia with a lowered license plate cutout is apparent, along with slimmer taillights connected by what appears to be an LED light strip.

While the exterior of the new Murano looks completely different from the current model, it is worth noting that the bones underneath will likely carry over. Nissan’s D platform and the 2024 Murano’s 3.5-liter V6 engine – likely in an updated form – will continue to play important roles. A nine-speed automatic is expected to channel the power from the combustion mill to all four wheels.

In the meantime, you can still buy the old Murano for one more year. For 2024, Nissan retires the base S grade and instead, the SV trim will become the new entry-level model. In its front-wheel-drive configuration, the 2024 Murano SV starts at $39,255, representing a $760 increase compared to the 2023 Murano SV. Part of this increase can be attributed to the slightly higher $1,335 destination charge, up from the previous year’s $1,295.

A little over a month ago, a report emerged about Toyota’s alleged desire to launch a small pickup in the United States by adapting the Corolla’s underpinnings for a more utilitarian vehicle. Automotive News speculated that the intention is to have the truck on sale in 2027 at the earliest. However, AN has now received clarification from a company official that a compact ute is not on the agenda.

Toyota Motor North America’s Group Vice President and General Manager, David Christ, said: “We don’t have anything planned.” As if that wasn’t clear enough, he went on to mention: “We’re not announcing anything to the dealers [at the meeting this week in Las Vegas]. I won’t even say ‘yet’ because that would suggest it’s coming.”

2023 Ford Maverick Tremor: First Drive

Dave Christ admitted Toyota has “obviously watched Maverick closely” and that a smaller truck to slot below the Tacoma is “something we’ve looked at.” He pointed out how pickups have gotten substantially larger over the decades, suggesting there would be room in the lineup for a modern-day Stout.

His thoughts were echoed by Steve Gates, chairman of the Toyota National Dealer Council. He believes a downsized truck would generate great volume without hampering demand for larger pickups like the Tacoma or Tundra. Dave Christ acknowledged Toyota dealers across the US have been asking for a model to fight the Maverick, which has “done reasonably well” for the Blue Oval. The Santa Cruz wasn’t mentioned in the interview but Hyundai has its own small unibody truck.

Reports from Japan are suggesting Toyota will launch the next-generation Hilux in 2024. However, this global truck is roughly the same size as the Tacoma and it wouldn’t make sense to sell it in the US. Given the versatility of the TNGA platform, underpinning everything from the Yaris to the Century SUV, it doesn’t seem impossible to adapt the architecture for truck duty. That said, it looks as though a Maverick rival will not hit the market in the forseeable future.

      ]]>
Crossovers and SUVs reached a major sales milestone in the first six months of the year by accounting for more than half of total new vehicle deliveries in Europe for the first time ever. Their market share grew to 51 percent, representing a significant jump compared to the first half of 2022 when it was at 48 percent. Sales numbers collected by market researcher Dataforce show deliveries grew by 23 percent over H1 2022, reaching 3.37 million units.

Looking at the top 10 most popular SUVs in H1 2023, the Tesla Model Y was first with 138,152 units, or a whopping 207 percent more than in the same period of last year. The only other SUV that managed to generate over 100,000 sales was the Volkswagen T-Roc with 104,465 (up by 32 percent). Toyota nearly made it to the six-figure club with the Yaris Cross (96,849 units), representing an increase of 49 percent.

      2022 Volkswagen T-Roc facelift

The top 10 was rounded off by the VW Tiguan, Dacia Duster, Hyundai Tucson, Peugeot 2008, Kia Sportage, Renault Captur, and the Ford Puma. Overall, small SUVs were the most popular on the Old Continent in H1 2023, accounting for 1,133,822 sales, followed by compact SUVs with 999,568 sales, and small cars with 913,571 sales.

That doesn’t mean regular cars are a dying breed since the Dacia Sandero still had a strong first half of the year with 124,190 units. In addition, the Opel Corsa, Peugeot 208, and Renault Clio were all sold in more than 100,000 examples. The Skoda Octavia had an excellent H1 2023 with deliveries jumping by 77.3 percent to 83,073 units after parent company VW Group solved the production bottlenecks. The Golf still beat its more practical and larger Czech sibling, at 88,899 units.

Several automakers have expressed their concern about the fate of small models – be they regular cars or crossovers/SUVs – if the Euro 7 standard will be applied in its current form in 2025. For example, VW has warned that tweaking combustion engines to meet the tougher legislation will result in price hikes that would make these vehicles too expensive. Consequently, cars like the Polo and Fabia face an uncertain future.

Budget 2023: Chancellor announces fuel duty will be frozen

Petrol and diesel owners have been told that pressing one simple button in their cars could add more than 20 miles to their fuel economy.

Instructor Richard Fanders, representing Conquer Driving, conducted an experiment using stop-start systems found on modern cars.

Mr Fanders drove an identical car for one hour using the stop-start system and then going over the same route without the technology in place.

After the trips, he broke down the data on his YouTube channel to show how switching on the tool can help drivers keep hold of valuable petrol or diesel.

According to Conquer Driving, with 30 litres of fuel in the tank, a vehicle can cover a whopping 213 miles if the stop-start system is in place.

READ MORE ‘I’m a car expert – one button could increase fuel consumption by 20 percent’

Meanwhile, turning off the tool would see the model travel just 190 miles despite having the same amount of fuel in the tank.

The data showed the trip would cost £2.21 with the system activated compared to £2.47 without the tool being used.

The stop-start system did not even affect journey times with both identical trips completed within one minute of each other.

However, despite the positive results, Mr Fanders has warned there is still a question mark over whether drivers would save money getting a car with a stop-start system in place.

Although less fuel was used on the trip, the motoring expert stressed cars with the technology in place are likely to be a lot more expensive to purchase.

He explained: “So in answer to the question, does stop-start save you money? Well, it certainly saves you fuel driving in those conditions in this car.

“Whether or not it saves you money because the car is probably going to be a bit more expensive to buy, The batteries are more expensive, Although they do tend to last longer.

“Whether it saves you money or not that’s a bit more complicated but it certainly seems to save you fuel.

“Of course, it depends on the journey, If your journey has lots of traffic lights and lots of traffic, stop-start can save you fuel.

“If you’re on a flowing journey, you’re probably not going to notice the difference.”

Research from the American Automobile Association found that stop-start technology resulted in around a five to seven percent improvement in fuel economy.

Experts at the RAC added: “This saving may seem small but would certainly add up over the lifecycle of your car. In any case, the data shows that they certainly don’t use more fuel.”

The fourth-generation Toyota Vios has received a five-star rating from the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP), with this model subject to the more comphrehensive 2021-2025 assessment protocol.

The ASEAN NCAP report states that the variant tested was the G variant, built in Malaysia for the Malaysian market. The rating also applies to other variants of the Vios, made in Thailand for Brunei, Indonesia, Laos and Cambodia.

Adult occupant protection (AOP) finds the Vios scoring 35.25 points from a possible 40 points in the category, while child occupant protection (COP) sees the B-segment sedan score 16.64 points out of a possible 20 points in the category.

GB News: Energy UK ex chief savages 2030 low-carbon goal

A Conservative MP has attacked Rishi Sunak’s petrol and diesel car ban as an “unfair and undeliverable” policy.

John Hayes, MP for South Holland and the Deepings has called out the “war on motorists”, stressing those at the top were unaware of normal citizens’ concerns.

The Prime Minister is pushing ahead with plans to ban the sale of new combustion engine vehicles by 2030, first mooted by Boris Johnson.

This will force companies to only sell electric vehicles by the start of the next decade with petrol and diesel cars only available in the used car market.

Manufacturers will soon be forced to comply with the new Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate which will enforce limits on the number of petrol and diesel models sold.

Mr Hayes told Spalding Today: “It’s time to acknowledge that the ban on new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 is unfair and undeliverable.

“Recent polling found that around 60 percent of people want the plans to be scrapped or delayed.”

Mr Hayes added that plans to hammer motorists were driven by “out-of-touch bourgeois liberals”.

He added those making decisions had “no sense” of how many people rely on vehicles in their daily lives.

The Tory MP was the Transport Minister between 2016 and 2018 when the ban was set to come into effect by 2050.

He commented “Today, there are more than 35 million automobiles on Britain’s roads, with over 77 percent of households owning one.

“For many people in a rural area like ours, a car is the means of getting to work, taking children to school, or getting to a hospital appointment. For thousands of my constituents, access to a car is a necessity, not a luxury.

“In my childhood, people used to speak of ‘going out for a drive’ as a weekend treat.

“Few would say the same today, as climate alarmists are determined to make car ownership more of a burden than a pleasure.”

A new poll from Elecrifying.com and the AA found that just 16 percent of road users backed the Government’s 2030 deadline.

It comes as consumer confidence in electric cars is also down with just nine percent saying they would consider buying an EV as their next model.

Earlier this summer, Sunak promised the change would not impact families’ finances due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

He told BBC Radio Scotland: “What I have said more generally on my approach, is that we will transition to net zero, I’m committed to it, but we will do it in a proportionate and pragmatic way that doesn’t necessarily add burden or cost to families’ bills, particularly at a time when inflation is higher than any of us would have liked.”
