Drag racing is one way to test a car’s performance capability against other vehicles. Supercars can easily lay down blisteringly quick quarter-mile times, but some people like to build their race cars. Results vary, but we have seen some fascinating creations, like the modified Volkswagen Golf MkII in the video above.

The black hood, which doesn’t fully close, and the excessive number of stickers should be your first indication that this isn’t a Volkswagen with just a mild upgrade. The front-wheel-drive car has chunky Hoosier tires attached to a mysterious diesel powertrain that offsets the car’s balance.

The video shows the Golf driver peeling out for the pre-race tire warmup, slamming on the brakes. However, the VW doesn’t come to a gentle stop. The sticky Hoosier tires wrinkled like a Top Fuel dragster, sending the car’s lightweight rear end into the air as it performed an endo.

The car had so much momentum that its front bumper helped prevent it from toppling all the way over. The car’s front wheels also appeared to have left the track, but it was brief if it did happen. After the VW scraped its bumper, it crashed back down onto all four wheels before completing its run.

The peppy Golf, which spewed black smoke during its warmup from right behind the front tires, faced off against a blue Shorty bus. The Golf rocketed away from the starting line and had a 1.74-second 60-foot time. It crossed the finish line in 14.867 seconds and appeared to beat the bus.

It’s unclear what kind of powertrain and upgrades the Golf has, but we know it was built by Waldek Cars in Dresden, Germany. The race took place at the Santa Pod Raceway in the UK during the VW Action Show, which ran from September 1-3 and is now in its 47th year.

The modded Golf and the VW Action Show captures the breadth of the automotive community. Seeing a 30-year-old Golf almost roll forward onto its roof is not something you see every day, and it wouldn’t be possible without dedicated enthusiasts behind the wheel and in the stands.

Germany’s autobahn is one of the last places you can drive as fast as you want, or at least as fast as your car will go. However, even without limits, it’s difficult to reach some cars’ top speed because of traffic or because of how fast those cars are capable of going.

That’s the problem with owning a vehicle like the BMW M5 Competition. The 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 produces 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. It’s enough power to propel the 4,400-pound sedan to 60 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds and exceed 190 mph when given enough runway. And despite its weight, the M5 can dance. In 2019, the standard M5 turned in a seven-minute, 38.95-second lap time at the Nurburgring. The Competition version bested that time with a 7:35.90 lap.

Gallery: 2021 BMW M5 Competition: Review

Runway or not, the driver of this BMW M5 wastes no time getting up to speed. The powerful sedan makes several passes above 170 mph and even touches 192 mph at one point. The M5 accelerates like a private jet, building momentum like it’s preparing to leave the ground. Every run begins with the muted growl of the forced induction V8 as the speedometer races and the scenery blurs.

Despite its mass, the F90 BMW M5 was heralded as the return of the king. Produced from 2017 to 2023, it’s regarded in some circles as the true heir to the E39 M5, which ended its reign in 2003. The E39 established the formula and set the bar for subsequent M5 sedans. The E60, with its screaming V10 engine, and the F10 that followed, were amazing cars. However, the F90 really confirmed that BMW was back on its game. Like the other M cars, the current M5 is an incredible machine capable of embarrassing more exotic-looking performance cars.

Lately, there’s been a new BMW M5 testing at the Nurburgring. Expected to debut for the 2024 model year, the next version retains the V8 engine and adds hybrid power. Judging from what we’ve heard, the next M5 will be faster and more capable. But for now, we can enjoy the audacious performance of the current one.

Honda has strong performance car credentials in its history like the Civic SI, S2000, Acura NSX, and others. But, how do they compare in a drag race? This video answers that question.

Hagerty collects the Acura Integra Type R, Honda S2000 CR, first-gen NSX, the current Integra Type S, and the latest Civic Type R for a series of drag races to compare these sporty models spanning several decades of automotive development. The video only evaluates the vehicles in a straight line, so there’s no discussion about how they handle or brake.

Gallery: 2024 Acura Integra Type S First Drive Review

The first drag race is for the classics of this group – the Integra Type R, NSX, and S2000 CR. The NSX takes a lead straight from the starting line and doesn’t give it up. The S2000 and Integra Type R have a closer sprint. They’re close at first, but the convertible eventually pulls ahead.

The NSX manages to cover the quarter-mile in 13.5 seconds at 104 miles per hour. The S2000 is second with a time of 14.2 seconds while traveling 98 miles per hour. Finally, the Integra Type R needs 15.2 seconds to cover the distance while going 93 mph.

Gallery: 2023 Honda Civic Type R Review

Hagerty then pits the NSX against the new Civic Type R and Integra Type S. The two recent models are largely the same. Both have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a six-speed manual. The variant in the Acura has 320 horsepower and 310 pound-feet while the Honda has 315 hp and 310 lb-ft.

The drag face is fascinating. The NSX takes an early lead, but the Civic Type R and Integra Type S catch up quickly. What’s shocking is that all three vehicles clock quarter-mile times of 13.5 seconds.

The results are so close that Hagerty decides to re-run the race from a roll. All three vehicles still cross the finish line at practically the same time. A winner is too close to call.

Who’s up for a bit of drag racing? Folks in the Netherlands recently enjoyed some door-to-door action at Breda International Airport, where the third edition of Hart Voor Auto’s gathering of cars recently took place. This clip shared on YouTube from the DutchMotorsport channel shows highlights of the action, and we have great news. Whether you’re into supercars, hot hatches, wagons, or muscle cars, there’s something here for just about everyone.

Actually, that’s not the really great news. In a world where car videos on YouTube often come with voiceovers or music tracks, this clip is 18 minutes (18:48 to be exact) of pure engine sound. And trust us when we say there are some fantastic mills creating a legit symphony of horsepower. The only thing missing in this collection is a V12, but honestly, you won’t care one teeny bit once you hit the play button.

We’d love to describe each race but we know you clicked this to watch and listen, and frankly, that’s exactly what you should do. However, allow us a moment to offer some top tips for viewing in case you don’t presently have 18 minutes to spare. There are worse ways to start a video than seeing a TT RS face off against an R33 Nissan Skyline, but then you get a McLaren 720S racing a modified Seat Leon diesel about a minute in. And it’s a freaking close race.

It gets wilder from there. Enjoy the Audi RS6 in police livery racing a Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo at the 10:40 mark. There’s a bonkers C3 Chevrolet Corvette racing just about everything, though we’re fond of its match with the aforementioned McLaren which you can see at the 8:56 mark. Radwood fans will enjoy the C4 Corvette racing a modded 1990s Chevy pickup a 4:08, and the American muscle theme continues with an old Fox Body Mustang notchback bringing some pain to a sixth-gen Shelby GT350 at 4:57. There’s even some comedy at 3:50, when the driver of an Audi RS3 forgets to shift out of reverse before launching.

There are many more matches in this clip, so sit back, turn the sound up, and enjoy the action as we bid adieu to the summer racing season in the northern latitudes.

With a price of $118,700, the BMW M3 CS isn’t exactly cheap. But bear in mind this is one of the fastest and most exclusive sedans in the world, only fewer than 2,000 units of which will be produced. BMW is so proud of its super sedan that it even took it to the Nurburgring recently for a few laps around the legendary track and produced an onboard video showing the fastest lap from the cabin.

As announced earlier this week, the M3 CS lapped the 14.2-mile Nordschleife section of the circuit in 7 minutes 28.76 seconds. This is a decent result considering the vehicle tips the scales at around 3,891 pounds. Also, it makes the M3 CS faster on the Green Hell than vehicles such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia QV and, more notably, the M5 Competition. The last time we saw the M5 CS on the track, it registered a time of 7:29.57 minutes.

Gallery: 2024 BMW M3 CS

We’ve seen the M3 CS in action before and we know it is also mighty quick off the line. In fact, it is quicker than what BMW advertises a recent video showed the 0 to 62 miles per hour acceleration takes 3.2 seconds compared to 3.4 seconds listed from the automaker. Also, the sedan does the 0-124 mph sprint in 10.37 seconds beating the official 11.1-second time provided by BMW. Last but not least, the quarter-mile run takes 10.86 seconds.

Those are all pretty impressive numbers – how are they possible considering the vehicle’s relatively high weight? Well, for starters, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine under the hood of the M3 CS produces 543 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. That power reaches all four wheels exclusively through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Last but not least, optional carbon-ceramic brakes provide better stopping power while traction is improved thanks to 275/35 ZR19 front and 285/30 ZR20 rear Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

This wasn’t the only M model BMW brought to the Nurburgring recently. The M2 set a new record for the fastest compact car on the track, while the automaker also hinted about a potentially faster M4 version, which we believe is the M4 CS.

Audi has made numerous versions of its R8 supercar since it launched in 2007. The model has been available in coupe and convertible body styles with both rear- and all-wheel-drive powertrains propelling the car. A new video sees three different versions of the R8 – a GT, an R8 Performance Quattro Spyder, and an R8 Performance RWD – race against each other to see how their differences shake out on the track.

All three R8 supercars feature the same 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 engine and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, but the outputs vary. The R8 GT makes 620 horsepower and 418 pound-feet (565 Newton-meters) of torque. The R8 Performance Spyder makes the same amount of horsepower and more torque, turning out 427 lb-ft (580 Nm) of twist.

Gallery: 2023 Audi R8 V10 GT RWD

The R8 Performance with rear-wheel drive makes the least amount of power of the bunch. Its engine produces 570 hp and 405 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque. It’s also 44 pounds (20 kilograms) heavier than the GT, weighing 3,505 lbs (1,590 kg) compared to 3,461 lbs (1,570 kg). The R8 Spyder is the heaviest of the bunch at 3,739 lbs (1,695 kg).

The lighter, more powerful R8 GT won the first race, with the heavier Quattro variant taking third. The second race saw the GT finish last, losing to the R8 and R8 Spyder.

While the three have different power outputs from the same engine, they all took 11.3 seconds to complete the quarter-mile sprint in the third and final race. The R8 GT had the power to win, but the rear-wheel-drive variant crossed the finish line first.

The GT shined in the final two rolling races, winning both. The R8 Spyder brought up the rear for two third-place finishes. The convertible also lost the brake test at the end, as did the GT, which lost to the RWD R8 by mere inches.

The Audi R8 is at the end of its line. Production will cease at the end of the 2023 model year, with the R8 GT as its swan song. Audi will only produce 333 examples for the world, with the US getting 150 of them. It’s the most potent rear-wheel-drive R8 ever, with a starting price of $251,395 (price includes the $1,495 destination charge).

The autobahn lets drivers legally attain tremendous speeds. A mildly modified 991.2-generation Porsche 911 Turbo S pushes the velocity to the limits by reaching 202 miles per hour (325 kilometers per hour).

This Turbo S has an exhaust from IPE and no mention of other modifications. The text on the screen says the car has 4,580 horsepower, which is clearly a typo. In stock trim, this model generation uses a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-six engine making 572 hp.

There’s not too much traffic on the autobahn today, allowing the driver to make multiple high-speed runs. The car spends a lot of time going over 124 mph (200 kph).

The modified exhaust gives the 911 a more aggressive sound. Judging by the audio in this clip, the tone isn’t overly loud, and there isn’t a droning sound.

The Turbo S features four-wheel steering and all-wheel drive. The car looks stable in this video, even as the car is traveling well into triple-digit speeds.

The 991.2 is the internal reference for the refreshed version of the previous generation 911. The Turbo S variant arrived for the 2017 model year. Compared to the earlier iteration. Powertrain modifications allowed for an output increase over the previous 552 horsepower.

Gallery: 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S

The latest iteration of the 911 Turbo S debuted in March 2020 (pictured above). It can reach 60 miles per hour in 2.6 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph. The only gearbox option is an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. The aerodynamic elements include adaptive cooling flaps in the front and a larger rear wing than the previous version. Ceramic composite brakes and the Porsche Active Suspension Management Sport system are standard features

Porsche is currently developing a refresh for the whole 911 range, including the Turbo model. It has minor design tweaks at the front and rear. Inside, there is now a digital instrument cluster. No powertrain details are available, but previous model refreshes include engine output improvements. We expect the standard Carrera trim to premiere before the end of the year. We might not see the improved Turbo until 2024 because Porsche tends to stagger the launch of revised vehicles.

Precisely zero people will cross-shop the Porsche 911 and the Lucid Air, but that didn’t stop Carwow from orchestrating a drag race to see whether ICE can still put up a good fight against an EV. The Zuffenhausen resident was a 911 Turbo S while its contender was the Dream Performance, so high-end variants of both the flat-six coupe and the dual-motor sedan.

While weight is the enemy of performance, the instant response of an electric motor shows you can offset the extra bulk in a straight-line acceleration test as long as you have ludicrous power. As tested, the Air Dream Performance tipped the scales at a colossal 5,235 pounds, thus making it over 1,600 lbs heavier than the 911 Turbo S.

2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe: First Drive

The heavier car wouldn’t stand a chance in an ICE vs ICE duel, but the purely electric Lucid has 1,111 hp and 1,025 pound-feet whereas the Porsche has to make do with 640 hp and 590 lb-ft from its twin-turbo 3.7-liter gasoline engine. The Taycan Turbo S would’ve been a more logical contender but it’s interesting to see how a sports car from the old guard stacks up against a luxury family sedan that does away with the combustion engine.

Usually, we expect EVs to be quicker off the line in a drag race before the ICE begins to catch up but it was the other way around. The 911 Turbo S initially had an advantage until the Air Dream Performance closed the gap and went on to win the first two drag races. With the stability control system turned off during the third duel, the Porsche was even quicker at the start and managed to win after a photo finish.

The 911 had no chance in the subsequent rolling races to the half-mile mark, and it also lost when the two cars raced to the full mile. Yes, the Lucid managed to win even though the electronic top speed limiter kicked in at 168 mph. The Porsche did triumph in the last duel by being the first to come to a halt during the brake test from 100 mph.

Lest we forget the Air Dream Performance is not the range-topping version as the Sapphire has a tri-motor setup with 1,234 hp and 1,430 lb-ft. of torque.

The Rimac Nevera is now the fastest electric vehicle around the Nurburgring after beating Tesla’s lap record by 20 seconds. Just earlier this year, the Croatian hypercar also set an EV record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed – more details about those two records can be found at the related links below. But if you want to know whether the Nevera is faster in a standing-start drag race than two of the world’s most capable machines on two wheels, just stay in this article.

In its new video, Carwow lines up a fantastic trio. The Nevera with its four electric motors and a combined output of 1,914 horsepower is the only automobile in this race. It is mighty powerful but it is also the heaviest in this drag race by far, tipping the scales at 5,070 pounds (2,300 kilograms) due to its massive 120-kilowatt-hour battery pack.

Gallery: Rimac Nevera First Customer Delivery In United States

There’s also a MotoGP bike on the track. It has a 1,000-cc engine with a peak output of 270 hp and weighs in at around 346 lbs (157 kg). Last but not least, a Suzuki Hayabusa is also at the drag strip but this is not a factory example – it has a supercharger added to its 1.3-liter four-cylinder mill for a power output of 380 hp. It tips the scales at around 566 lbs (257 kg).

As you would probably imagine even only from the numbers, these three machines are pretty fast. There’s no shortage of power but as it often turns out, traction is way more important in these drag races. The Nevera has zero problems with its all-wheel drive but the two bikes struggle to find enough traction from the start.

Of course, we are not going to spoil the results of this drag race. We will just tell you that it’s an impressively close battle between the Rimac and the race bike. The Hayabusa? It is mighty powerful but it has issues finding enough traction.

The Dodge Durango and the Tesla Model Y aren’t what you’d call direct competitors, even in their most potent variants. Sure, they’re both made in America, they’re both SUVs/crossovers, and in some variants, they can both offer three rows of seating.

But that’s about where the similarities end because, in SRT Hellcat trim, the Dodge Durango is a gasoline-drinking people hauler powered by a massive 6.2-liter V8, while the Model Y Performance scoots along silently thanks to an electric dual-motor setup.

The Durango sends all of its 710 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the Model Y doesn’t have a gearbox, relying on a single speed to get moving.

Furthermore, the three-row V8-powered SUV isn’t exactly light, tipping the scales at 5,567 pounds, while the electric crossover weighs 4,419 lbs.

Pricing-wise, the electric Model Y Performance, which doesn’t offer a seven-seat layout in the United States, starts at $54,490, while the bigger Durango SRT Hellcat goes from $93,605. The Durango is also quite old, with the current generation going into production at the end of 2010, while the Model Y is ten years younger.

With this being said, the good people at Edmunds put the two cars head to head in what they call a U-drag race, where the vehicles go down a quarter mile straight, then brake, turn around, and go down the quarter mile again but in the other direction.

Embedded at the top of this page, the video of the race shows that both cars accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in exactly 4 seconds and that the Durango managed to ever so slightly get the edge on the quarter mile, scoring a 12.4-second run, while the Tesla was at 12.5 seconds.

In other words, even though the two vehicles seem different on paper, it turns out that in reality they’re very closely matched. But, as always, there can be only one winner, so head over to the video to see the outcome.
